2022 Division Scholarly Program: Call for Submissions

The Organizations & the Natural Environment (ONE) Division invites submissions for the scholarly program of the 82nd Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management, which will take place in a hybrid format from August 5 to August 9, 2022. The Submission Center opens in December 2021. You may send us submissions through the AOM Submission Center until it closes on Tuesday, 11 January 2022 at 17:00 (5pm) ET (NY Time).

The Academy's new hybrid meeting model will allow attendees to participate on-site in-person in Seattle as well as virtually. Virtual participation will allow for three types of experiences that – combined – will offer true global participation:

  • Synchronous virtual only ("webinar" and "meeting" style) sessions

  • Asynchronous (on demand) virtual only sessions

  • Live-streamed on-site hybrid sessions

Our ONE Domain: The ONE Division is devoted to research that addresses how organizations impact and are impacted by the natural environment.  Given the substantial environmental challenges we are facing – among those climate change, resource depletion and biodiversity loss – we encourage impactful scholarship that addresses how these challenges affect managerial practice, organizational strategy and broader society. We particularly encourage scholarship that offers insights into strategies and actions that can contribute to possible solutions.

The Conference Theme: The 2022 AOM theme "Creating a Better World Together” emphasizes questions of direct relevance for our division. As we emerge from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, what will the “new normal” look like? There is new awareness of the global scale of problems that we are facing, but also of the far-reaching capacity of business organizations to contribute to possible solutions. These forces will lead to new and substantial demands on organizations to address global environmental degradation, but also social challenges and inequalities. At the same time, we are facing counter-voices in the form of science denial and anti-science propaganda that hampers efforts to design effective responses. Business organizations will face challenges and opportunities in their quest to address pressing challenges such as those mapped out by the United Nations in their 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). ONE Scholars can substantially contribute to creating insights how the challenges and opportunities can be best navigated.

Our Invitation: The ONE Division invites papers and symposia that address all aspects of the relationship between organizations and the natural environment. The ONE Division should be able to contribute significantly to the 2022 AOM theme "Creating a Better World Together”. The ONE Division can substantially contribute to a program focused on envisioning how we can “create future institutions, relationships, systems, and processes that are different from the past”, as outlined in the announcement of the main conference theme.

The ONE Division encourages paper and symposium submissions that reflect on the question of how business organizations can help alleviate pressing global environmental challenges such as climate change and biodiversity loss, and how they can contribute to possible solutions, for instance, through responsible innovation. Joint symposium proposals are welcome, as the theme "Creating a Better World Together”  draws on multi-disciplinary approaches across other Academy divisions and interest groups.

Our division especially invites PhD students and new international members, including those who have not previously submitted research to the Academy or to the ONE Division.

Along with the Call for Submissions, the ONE Division also makes a Call for Reviewers. If you plan to submit a paper, please also help the division with reviewing submissions. We appreciate the efforts from our volunteer reviewers who offer constructive comments and provide a supportive atmosphere within the division.

The Submission Center opens early December 2021. The deadline for submissions is Tuesday, 11 January 2022 at 17:00 (5pm) ET (NY Time).

ONE Division Awards: The ONE Division offers multiple awards (see Awards section of our website).

The Program Chair and Team selects the awards for the Best PaperBest Student Paper, and Best Reviewer Awards.

In addition, the ONE Division puts forward papers eligible for Academy awards, such as the William H. Newman Award for an outstanding single-authored paper from a dissertation and the Carolyn Dexter Best International Paper Award.

Please indicate eligibility for these awards when submitting your paper in the system (see Orientation and Awards section in the submission guidelines for more details). Please also pay particular attention to all submission guidelines. The Program Chairs have agreed to apply them rigorously and reject non-conforming papers.

Join ONE in our efforts to Create a Better World Together!

We look forward to receiving your submissions. For any questions, please contact the ONE Program Chair.
