Academy of Management Board of Governors

The Board of Governors, the primary governing body of The Academy of Management has legal and fiduciary accountability for the association and primary responsibility for direction setting and policy development. The board is comprised of 15 individuals, including the president, president-elect, vice president and program chair, vice president-elect and program chair-elect, past president, and nine elected representatives-at-large. The executive director and secretary-treasurer is an ex officio member of the board.

Notes on the members of the current AOM Board of Governors


President: Herman Aguinis, George Washington University


Herman Aguinis is the Avram Tucker Distinguished Scholar at the George Washington University School of Business. Previously, he held the John F. Mee Chair in Management in the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. He has held visiting scholar positions at universities in Australia, China, France, Spain, Singapore, South Africa, Malaysia, Puerto Rico, and Argentina. His multi-disciplinary, multi-method, and multi-level research addresses the acquisition, development, and deployment of human capital in organizations and organizational research methods.

He has published about 150 journal articles (e.g., AMJ, AMR, SMJ, JAP) and eight books including Performance Management and Regression Analysis for Categorical Moderators, has delivered more than 125 presentations at universities in about 20 countries, and secured US $5 million in extramural funds (e.g., National Science Foundation). His research has been featured by Forbes, The Economist, Bloomberg Businessweek, USA Today, and other media.

A Fellow of the Academy of Management, he received AOM Practice Theme Committee Scholar Practice Impact Award recognizing an outstanding scholar who has had an impact on policy making and managerial and organizational practices, the Research Methods Division Distinguished Career Award for lifetime contributions, and the Entrepreneurship Division IDEA Thought Leader Award. In addition, he has received the best article of the year awards from five different journals. He also received Indiana University’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Building Bridges Award for promoting equality, equity, diversity, and justice.

He served as Editor-in-Chief of Organizational Research Methods and as guest editor for special issues of the Journal of Management on bridging micro and macro research domains and personnel psychology on corporate social responsibility. Selective examples of service to AOM  include President of the Iberoamerican Academy of Management, Task Force Member for redesigning AOM meetings, and Chair of the Research Methods Division.

President-Elect & Coordinator of Professional Divisions: Amy Hillman, Arizona State University

Amy Hillman

Amy Hillman is a Professor of Management and the Charles J. Robel Dean’s Chair of the W. P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University. She received her PhD from Texas A&M University in Strategic Management and Business & Public Policy and was formerly on the faculty of Michigan State University and University of Western Ontario.

She is former editor of Academy of Management Review, former associate editor of Academy of Management Journal, a Fellow of the Academy of Management and in 2018 received the Academy of Management’s Distinguished Educator Award. Her previous service to Academy of Management also includes the editorial boards of AMJ, AMR, and AMLE as well as serving the STR (BPS) division as a member of the executive committee and research committee, co-chairing mid-career and new faculty consortia, and on the SIM best paper committee. She is currently a member of the STR and OMT divisions.

Her research focuses on corporate political strategies, boards of directors, and corporate strategy. Hillman’s corporate experience includes serving as the general manager of a retail and manufacturing clothing business prior to joining academia, consulting for major corporations on corporate strategy and facilitating strategic planning, and advising companies on strategies to influence public policy. She serves as director and chair of the Nominating/Governance committee of Nasdaq traded CDK Global, a member of AMERCO’s independent governance committee, and serves on the non-profit boards of the Association for the Advancement of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and the ASU’s Research Park.

Vice President & Program Chair: Sharon Alvarez, University of Pittsburgh

Sharon Alvarez

Sharon Alvarez is the Thomas W. Olofson Chair in Entrepreneurial Studies at the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business, University of Pittsburgh. Professor Alvarez is the Past Chair of the Entrepreneurship pision of the Academy of Management and was the 2015 Denver Program Chair for the Strategic Management Society as well as Representative at Large for the SMS Entrepreneurship Interest Group.

Alvarez has been a Max Planck Scholar at the Max Planck Institute for Entrepreneurship and Economic Systems Research, she has been a visiting professor at Sun-Yet-Sen University in China, the University of Alberta, and the University of Utah. Her current research includes entrepreneurship theory of opportunities, firm, and market emergence. She is associate editor for the Academy of Management Review and past associate editor for Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal. She has been published in Academy of Management Review, Organization Science, Strategic Management Journal, Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, Academy of Management Executive, Journal of Business Venturing, Journal of Management, and Human Resource Management Journal.

Alvarez’s paper (with Barney) “Discovery and Creation: Alternative Theories of Entrepreneurial Action” won the Academy of Management’s Entrepreneurship Division 2019 Foundational Paper Award as well as the Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal Best Paper Award; her paper (with Barney) “Forming and Exploiting Opportunities: The Implications of Discovery and Creation Processes for Entrepreneurial and Organizational Research” was the runner-up for the INFORMS award; and her paper (with Barney) “How Entrepreneurs Organize under Conditions of Uncertainty” won the Journal of Management Best Paper Award.

Vice President-Elect & Program Chair-Elect: Peter A. Bamberger, Tel Aviv University

Peter Bamberger

Peter A. Bamberger (PhD Cornell University) is the Simon I. Domberger Chaired Professor and Department Head of Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management at the Coller School of Management, Tel Aviv University. As a Senior Research Scholar at the School of Industrial and Labor Relations, Cornell University, Peter also serves as Research Director for the School's Smithers Institute. His research examines pay communication and compensation strategy, pro-social behavior in organizations, occupational health psychology, and the cognitive implications of discrete workplace events. Author of Human Resource Strategy (Sage, 2000; Routledge, 2014), Mutual Aid and Union Renewal (Cornell Univ. Press, 2001), Retirement and the Hidden Epidemic: The Complex Link Between Aging, Work Disengagement, and Substance Misuse and What to Do About It (Oxford Univ. Press, 2014), and Exposing Pay: How Pay Transparency and Disclosure Impacts Employees, Employers and the Societies in Which We Live (Oxford Univ. Press, forthcoming), Bamberger has published over 100 referreed journal articles in such journals as Academy of Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Review, and Journal of Applied Psychology.

An elected fellow of SIOP, Peter served as an associate editor of the Academy of Management Journal (2007-2010), founding associate editor and then editor-in-chief of Academy of Management Discoveries (2012-2020), and serves on the editorial board of several other leading journals. His interests outside academia include hiking, skiing, and family (wife, Ellen, and three kids, Zach, Sarah, and Noa).

Past President: Quinetta M. Roberson, Michigan State University

Quinetta Roberson

Quinetta M. Roberson is the John A. Hannah Distinguished Professor of Management and Psychology at Michigan State University. Prior to her current position, she was an endowed chair at Villanova University and a tenured professor at Cornell University. She has had the amazing opportunity to be a visiting scholar at universities on every continent (except Antarctica, but there's still time) and to serve as a program director at the National Science Foundation. Prior to earning her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, she obtained undergraduate and graduate degrees in finance and worked as a financial analyst.

Quinetta's research and teaching interests are in the fields of human resource management and organizational behavior—specifically, the experience and effects of diversity and fairness in organizations.

Her work has been published in AOM journals, such as Academy of Management Annals, Academy of Management Journal, and Academy of Management Review, as well as other top journals in the field. She has served as an Associate Editor at the Journal of Applied Psychology, served on several editorial boards, and is a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology.

Quinetta has been an active member of the Academy of Management for over 20 years. In addition to actively contributing to, and reviewing for, the annual PDW and scholarly programs, she has worked in various leadership roles, including: New Doctoral Student Consortium planning committee, Human Resources Division Best Student Paper Committee Chair, Gender and Diversity in Organizations Division Executive Board, Diversity & Inclusion Theme Committee Chair, and Representative-at-Large on the Board of Governors.

Representative-at-Large: Pratima Bansal, Western University

Pratima Bansal

Pratima Bansal is the Canada Research Chair in Business Sustainability at the Ivey Business School at Western University (London, Ontario). She founded and continues to direct Ivey's Centre for Building Sustainable Value  and the Network for Business Sustainability  ( She is also leading Ivey’s Innovation Learning Lab. All of these efforts aim to strengthen research and its ties with practice. She researches the nexus of time, space and scale in business strategy, in order to advance sustainable development. For her contributions to the research and practice of sustainability, Dr. Bansal was elected to the Royal Society of Canada in 2018, and named a ‘Distinguished Scholar’ by the Organizations and Natural Environment Division of the Academy of Management in 2017 and a ‘Faculty Pioneer by the Aspen Institute in 2008.

Bansal has published over 50 peer-reviewed academic journals in all of the Academy Journals, including the Annals, Discoveries, Journal, Review, Perspectives, and Learning and Education. She served as a Deputy Editor (2016-2019) and as an Associate Editor (2010-2013) for the Academy of Management Journal. She has also sat previously on nine editorial review boards. Her research has also been cited in the popular press including The Wall Street Journal, Globe and Mail and The Independent. She spoke at the TEDx Western event in 2013. Professor Bansal teaches at all levels of the business program, including undergraduates, MBAs, PhDs, and executives.

Representative-at-Large: Cynthia E. Devers, Texas A&M University

Cynthia Devers

Cynthia E. Devers is the Lawrence E. Fouraker Professor in Business and Associate Department Head of the Management Department in the Mays Business School at Texas A&M University. Devers is also an International Research Fellow at the Centre for Corporate Reputation at the University of Oxford and an Executive Committee Member of the U.S.-Pakistan Women’s Council, a public-private partnership between the U.S. Department of State and Texas A&M University focused on increasing women’s economic participation and empowerment.

She previously served as an Associate Editor for Academy of Management Review, and her work has appeared in outlets including Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Journal, Organization Science, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, Journal of Management, and others. In her research, she draws on behavioral and social psychological perspectives to examine the roles formal and informal governance mechanisms, social evaluations, and individual differences play in individual and organizational outcomes.

Representative-at-Large: Ingrid Fulmer, Rutgers University

Ingrid Fulmer

Ingrid Fulmer is a Professor of Human Resource Management and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the School of Management and Labor Relations at Rutgers University (USA), where she also previously served as director of the PhD program. In addition, Fulmer is an honorary Adjunct Professor (Level E) at the University of South Australia Business School. She recently completed her five-year term in the elected leadership track of the HR Division of the Academy of Management; prior to that, she served a three-year term as representative at large in the Division. She is active on several journal editorial boards and has been an associate editor of Academy of Management Review and of International Journal of Human Resource Management.

Fulmer’s teaching and research interests are in the areas of human resource management (with particular focus and expertise in compensation and reward systems), organizational behavior, and business ethics. Currently, she is engaged in research projects examining organizational pay communication/transparency and also organization-alumni relationships. Her published research has appeared in Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Management, Personnel Psychology, and Journal of Business Ethics, as well as in other journals and edited volumes. In her “former life,” prior to completing her Ph.D. at Vanderbilt University (USA), she worked as a certified public accountant and consultant. Whenever she has the opportunity, she is an enthusiastic traveler and adventurous cook/foodie.

Representative-at-Large: Lucy Gilson, University of Connecticut

Lucy Gilson

Lucy Gilson (Ph.D. Georgia Tech) is a Professor and the Associate Dean for Faculty & Outreach at the University of Connecticut. She is also the Academic Director of the Geno Auriemma UConn Leadership Conference, and a Research Fellow at the Universidade Catolica in Lisbon, Portugal. In 2019, the Web of Science named her one of the world’s most highly-cited researchers.

Her research examines teams in different organizational settings performing a diverse range of jobs to understand how creativity, empowerment, leadership, and virtual communication influence effectiveness. She has also done work on mentoring and leadership, in particular, the mentoring of women and minorities. Her work has been published in the Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Management, Leadership Quarterly, Group & Organization Management, Journal of Organizational Behavior, as well as many other academic journals and edited books.

Gilson has served on the Executive Committee of the Organizational Behavior Division of the Academy of Management, and the Southern Management Association, where she was inducted as a Fellow in 2019. She is the Senior Associate Editor of Group and Organization Management, where she also serves as Editor of the Annual Conceptual Issue, and is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Management. Lucy teaches Managing Organizational Change and Leadership and has been recognized as the teacher of the year on several occasions. She consults with many multinational companies and has worked with several state and national agencies including the Army Research Institute and the Army War College.

Representative-at-Large: Deanne N. Den Hartog, University of Amsterdam Business School

Deanne Den Hartog

Deanne N. Den Hartog is Professor of Organizational Behavior and head of the Leadership and Management section of the University of Amsterdam Business School (ABS). She is also currently director of the ABS research institute. Deanne earned her PhD (1997) from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in the Netherlands. She has held a number of visiting positions in the US and UK and is currently visiting research professor at the university of Southern Australia. In the Academy, Hartog served on the Organizational Behavior Division's Executive Committee as Representative-at Large (2011-14) and she represents the Netherlands in the International Ambassadors Program of the HR Division (2009-). Within the Academy she also participated in Junior Faculty Workshops, PDWs and Doctoral Consortiums, and award committees.

Beyond the Academy, Hartog served on the Board of Directors of the International Association of Applied Psychology (IAAP) (2006-2014), the board of the Netherlands foundation for Management Development (NfMD 2000-2007) and the board of the Dutch HRM network (2007-). Hartog also serves on the editorial boards of several journals and has co-edited several special issues and an Encyclopedia of International Management.  Her research interests include (un)ethical, charismatic, and cross-cultural leadership; dark traits; proactive and innovative work behavior; human resource management; and trust. She collaborates with many scientists on projects in these areas and has published in journals such as the Journal of Management, Journal of Applied Psychology, and Journal of Organizational Behavior.

Representative-at-Large: Morten Huse, BI Norwegian Business School


Morten Huse is a Professor of Organization and Management at BI Norwegian Business School with over 30 years of international academic experience. He has had professor positions in Germany, Italy and the Scandinavian countries, as well as visiting scholarships at universities in several other countries, including Australia and the United States.

During the 1990s, he contributed significantly in internationalizing AOM. In 1998-2001, he chaired AOM’s ‘International Themes Committee’. He has been actively involved in several AOM divisions, particularly SIM and ENT. Morten was a founding member of CMS, and he has been a member of AOM’s Advisory Council and of AOM’s Ethics Committee. He has been a member of the Strategic Management Society for 25 years. From 2010-2012, he was the president of the European Academy of Management (EURAM).

Huse is conducting phenomenological and programmatic research on boards of directors, gender and stakeholder issues, and a distinct research stream about ‘value-creating boards’ developed around his work. He is presently involved in research in Italy, India and the Middle East.

His research and teaching is characterized by mentorship, including a sharing and open philosophy. He has signed both the DORA and RRBM declarations/calls, and thus he has a focus on impact and importance. He has been awarded for championing the economic development of women (TIAW). He worked for one decade in business before taking on his Ph.D. He has frequently served as speaker internationally for academic, practitioner and political audiences, including in various parliaments and financial institutions.

Representative-at-Large: Keld Laursen, Copenhagen Business School

Keld Laursen

Keld Laursen is professor of the economics and management of innovation at Copenhagen Business School (CBS). He is also the head of the Department of Strategy and Innovation at CBS. He received his MSc degree from SPRU at the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom (1994) and got his PhD from the University of Aalborg in Denmark in 1998. Laursen was one of the co-editors of the leading journal in innovation research, Research Policy over the period 2014-2018, and he served on the chair track of the Academy of Management's Technology Innovation Management (TIM) Division for 2013-2018. For 2016-2017 he served as the Division’s chair.

Laursen has organized and co-organized a number of international conferences, including several vintages of the DRUID Summer Conference; the US rooted CCC (Consortium for Cooperation and Competition) Annual Colloquium for Doctoral Student Research held at Copenhagen Business School in 2009; and the European-based SEI (Strategy Entrepreneurship & Innovation) Doctoral Consortium in 2012. Laursen's primary area of expertise is in how firms manage innovation. Within this context, he has focused on the organizational aspects of open innovation and the consequences for innovation performance. His research has been published in outlets such as Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Economic Geography and Research Policy.

Representative-at-Large: Isabel Metz, University of Melbourne, Pennsylvania State University


Isabel Metz is a Professor of Organisational Behaviour at the Melbourne Business School, University of Melbourne. She received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Witwatersrand (South Africa), M.B.A. from Melbourne Business School, and Ph.D. from Monash University (Australia). Her pre-academia career was in Banking and Finance, and thus she champions research that is directly relevant to managers and employees. Isabel’s research aims to simultaneously help organizations manage talent and help individuals manage their careers.

She has been published in leading academic journals and has won prizes for her research papers at conferences. Metz is a member of the GDO, OB, HR, Careers and Research Methods Divisions, and of the Diversity & Inclusion Theme Committee (D&ITC). She has served as a reviewer, presenter, session chair and discussant, and member or chair of various GDO, OB, HR, Careers and AOM committees, including being on the Executive Committees of Careers (2006-2010), GDO (2013-2016), and D&ITC (2010-2017). Isabel was the Chair of D&ITC in 2015-2016.

Metz appreciates the value of diversity. She is a Portuguese descendant, born in Mozambique, who lived in Europe and graduated in South Africa—now she lives in Australia with her husband and three children. She regularly provides media commentaries and speaks at industry forums. Metz teaches in the areas of Management, HRM, and Managing Diversity in the Workplace. Her diverse experiences and research interests align directly with AOM’s mission to build a vibrant and supportive community of scholars. Metz aims to contribute to AOM’s continued success and strategic goals.

Representative-at-Large: Nelson Phillips, Imperial College Business School


Nelson Phillips is the Abu Dhabi Chamber Chair in Innovation and Strategy at Imperial College Business School in London, UK. Prior to joining Imperial in 2005, he was the Beckwith Professor of Management Studies at the Judge Business School at Cambridge University from 2001-2005 and a faculty member in the Faculty of Management at McGill University from 1993-2001.

He completed his Ph.D. in organizational analysis at the University of Alberta in 1995. Phillips’ research interests cut across strategy, innovation and leadership, and he has been published widely with papers in AMJ, AMR, AMLE and Annals. He served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Management Inquiry from 2008-2017 and is currently Editor-in-Chief of Organization: Management & Innovation. He has served on a number of editorial boards including the boards of Organization Studies, Academy of Management Journal, and the Academy of Management Perspectives. He is also currently a board member of the Society for the Advancement of Management Studies (the parent organization of the Journal of Management Studies).

Phillips' previous experience at AOM includes acting as a representative-at-large for the OMT Division from 2009 to 2011 and joining the executive committee of the OMT Division on the five-year track from 2012 to 2017. In 2018, he received the Joanne Martin Trailblazer Award from the OMT Division. He has been a member of the Academy of Management since 1992 and has attended 24 of the last 25 Academy of Management Meetings.
